Library for Health (NLH) transferred to NHS Evidence April 2009 . You can use the simple search for basic searches or the advanced search for more refined searches. Advanced search still uses the Search 2.0 interface to search the healthcare databases. To use advanced search and the subscribed information resources, you will need to log in with sn Athens password.

UpToDate is an evidence based, peer reviewed information resource covering more than 7,400 topics in 13 medical specialties (including oncology, haematology, gynaecology, critical care, internal medicine and endocrinology). UpToDate is formed from a clinical community of experts who function as reviewers, authors and editors. UpToDate users provide feedback to the editorial group. This community's combined efforts result in a comprehensive database of medical information. The database contains topic reviews that include a synthesis of the literature, the latest evidence, and specific recommendations for patient care. There are also patient information sections and new information is highlighted in the “what’s new” section.

The Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) has just published an updated version of it's guidance 'Systematic Reviews: CRD’s guidance for undertaking reviews in health care'. In the past this guidance has been widely used nationally and internationally.

The guidance is invaluable in gaining an understanding of systematic review methodology and can be found on the CRD website through the link to guidance .

New Discovery for Tamoxifen Resistance

Tamoxifen has been hailed as revolutionary in the treatment of breast cancer. After five years of treatment some women develop resistance and the cancer can return. Cancer Research UK Scientists in Cambridge have found a reason as to why some women develop this resistance. See the press release here. Cancer Beating Purple Tomatoes?

The media heralded the news that a tomato had been genetically modified to yield high concentrations of anthocyanins which may have protective properties against cancer, help in slimming and safeguard eyesight.

NLH - Annual Evidence update for Breast Cancer

The NLH Specialist Library for Cancer will launch its 2008 Breast Cancer Annual Evidence Update on 13 October.
The evidence update will be divided into sections and the resources included in the update are mostly systematic reviews and some guidance published in the preceding year (2007-2008).

If you require more recent literature or literature on a specific aspect of the disease, please contact the library and we will arange to search the literature on your own topic.

Telomerase, Lifestyle and Cancer

Telomerase plays a key role both in the of ageing process and cancer. An interesting study linking lifestyle and telomerase was recently published in Lancet Oncology. The study measured the levels of telomerase in white blood cells and the beginning and end of a 3 month period of lifestyle changes.

This swiftly follows the recent article about telomerase in Nature on 31st August.

DUETS - a resource to help prioritise new research

The Database of Uncertainties about the Effects of Treatments (DUETs) has been established in the UK to publish uncertainties that cannot currently be answered by referring to reliable up-to-date systematic reviews of existing research evidence.

DUETs is being developed to help those prioritising research in the UK to take account of the information needs of patients, carers and clinicians as promoted by the James Lind Alliance.

Contributions are restricted to those within the UK, with a view to informing prioritisation decisions for new research.

Well it's now September, for most of us the summer holidays have passed and a good chunk of annual leave has been used up!

It's a month since the Dialog healthcare databases ceased to be available to the NHS. Access to the healthcare databases (Medline, CINAHL, Embase etc.) is now through the NLH search interface. You still need to log in with your Athens password to get full access to resources.

You may want to have some training in how to get the best results from searching. Alternatively you may be using PubMed Medline. If you need any help with any of these resources the library staff can show you how to get the best results.

News item! Counselling for Cancer Patients

A recent BBC news item published this week called for better counselling for cancer patients to help them decide whether to undertake chemotherapy in certain situations.

Progress in Prostate Cancer Treatment

This weeks media reported promising results from a study in a small group of men with advanced prostate cancer who have few other treatment alternatives.

The study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology is a phase I study, and provides early evidence of the safety and tolerability of abiraterone. The drug could be a potentially effective treatment for men with untreatable prostate cancer.

Dialog databases finally go on 31st July!

Yes, on the 31st July there is no reprieve, these databases will no longer be available to NHS Athens accounts. Don't worry, just remember to make sure that you have printed the search history for any saved searches. You will then be able to work this up in the new provider of clinical databases, that is The National Library for Health. Alternatively there is always PubMed for Medline searches!

If you don't know how to use the new interface contact the library and we'll show you. We offer a range of training sessions on how to use all the databases, electronic journals and other library resources - all training is free, so make the most of it!

Part 1 published on the 4th July, reviews recent advances in the prevention, screening, and treatment of breast cancer in Clinical Review - Management of breast cancer—Part I BMJ 2008;337:a421.

The second part, Clinical Review - Management of breast cancer—Part II BMJ 2008;337:a540 was published on 11th July and discusses advances in the therapy of breast cancer.

Borrowing books

Non-reference books may be borrowed for up to 4 weeks. Renewals and reservations can be made either at the Front Desk, by 'phone on 3452/3453 or by e-mail to any member of the library staff.

We do appreciate the prompt return of books, however these may be renewed up to 3 times (for a period of 3 months maximum) when we must see them in the Library before re-issuing.

Please remember we currently do not fine for overdue books, however the Library has a policy of recovering costs for non-returned items whereby the Finance department will raise an invoice for the full cost of replacing the books.

As might be anticipated, the recommendation is that whilst a healthy lifestyle is obviously beneficial to anyone, prostate cancer sufferers should still discuss appropriate treatment with their doctors and not rely on lifestyle changes alone.

This is a medical information database with around 3000 clinical topic summaries to support clinical decision making.
DynaMed is designed for use at the point of care and is updated daily. Around 500 journals are monitored and there are also links to relevant articles associated with the topics.

An Athens username and password is required to access the database which can be accessed from the National Library for Health or through the link above.

Behind the News - Cancer

Found on the NHS Choices - your health your choice website, behind the headlines is a service that provides an evidence-based analysis of health stories that make the news. It aims to respond to news stories the day they appear in the media.

There are various topics such as diabetes, lifestyle, medication and of course cancer.

News stories such as, "genes play a role in lung cancer" based on articles published in Nature and "lower dose radiotherapy for cancer" in the Lancet have a short synopsis plus links to other articles etc.

There is an array of other information on the NHS Choices website such as the Health A-Z and scroll down the page for links to further information resources.

New Online- National Library for Public Health

The National Library for Public Health (NLPH) is a new online specialist library of the National Library for Health, which is aimed at everyone involved in the delivery or support of health and social care in England .

The project is being directed by the North East Public Health Observatory on behalf of the Association of Public Health Observatories, as part of the Information and Intelligence Strategy published by the Department of Health.

Online Journals for Managers

The EBSCO Health Business Elite collection covering a range of health management topics, will be available from 1 April. There are around 500 full text journals in the collection, including the prestigious in Harvard Business Review.

You can find the collection by logging in to your My Athens account, database searches on NLH or from the library web pages.

To access the full text you will need an NHS Athens user name and password.

PubMed or Google Scholar?

We all know about Google but what is PubMed?

PubMed provides access to citations from biomedical literature.
It is largely composed of the MEDLINE database, from the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). However, PubMed has quite a few extras such as: in-process citations (records for an article before it is indexed with MeSH and added to MEDLINE or converted to out-of-scope status) and some life science journal articles that have yet to be included in MEDLINE.

The database is updated on a daily basis and indexes journal articles and literature from journals such as JNCI, BMJ, Lancet, Lancet Oncology, NEJM, Nature, Cancer, British Journal of Cancer and the list goes on.....
Besides looking for the published literature in MEDLINE, you can find early online articles and new biomedical research as it's published.

If you use your NHS Athens password to access the CINAHL database you will see a change. You will not be able to access CINAHL using the Dialog interface. Instead you will have to go to the National Library for Health website at http://www.library.nhs.uk/.

Database Changes: Athens access to Dialog Databases

There will be a change in the provision of the clinical databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, BNI, PsycInfo and AMED) which are currently accessed through your NHS Athens account.

It is anticipated that from May 2008 the search engine will change from the Dialog interface to a new one provided by NLH (National Library for Health). NLH is now providing a single interface to search all these databases .

This will still be acessed by using your NHS Athens account, however you will need to transfer any saved searches that you have created in the Dialog databases to the new NLH interface when it is up and running.

The library will be providing training in the use of the new interface and offering advice on the most appropriate resource to suit your needs.

Using MY Athens

When you log in to the MY Athens link it will open at the home page. you can customise this to show information that you are interested in. You can move the blocks of information around on the page by clicking on the square icon within the box. If you need any explanation or help with this contact your home library.

You will also see a "Resources" tab which will take you to the links for the resources you are able to access through your Athens username.

There is also a tab for "My Account". This has your personal information on it and allows you to change your password or notify us of any change in e mail address.
